Narrabeen is 23 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district and is part of the Northern Beaches region. This area was originally named Broken Bay by James Cook as he sailed by.

The northern end of Narrabeen Beach is often used for surfing competition and it is also the breeding ground for many Australian surfing champions. The waves are famous for their varying behaviour depending on the lake's outflow, the tide and the swell. Some well-known configurations are known as Carpark Rights and Alley Rights. The latter referring to the Alleyway – a rip known as The Alley which provides an easy ride out.

The suburb has excellent schools, good restaurants, supermarket, a prize-winning butcher, arguably the best fish shop on the Northern beaches and several above-average cafes. If you're not addicted to sand and sun, the area also has many great golf courses, including the best public access links course in Sydney, Long Reef.
